Project outline
This is an outline of our sign and our plan on what we were going to paint. It is a sketch on binder paper and overall, the finished product looked even better than the sketch. Overall, we planned very well and knew what we were going to do from the start.

Finished!
On March 28th, 2018, we finished our Hummingbird Garden Sign! It is very colorful with a beautifully painted hummingbird and it was so much fun to create. We can't wait to see it up installed in the garden!
Timeline
- Monday, March 19th, 2018 - Leah and Sydney discussed how they were going to split up the painting and who was buying what materials. We sketched the sign on a piece of binder paper so we had an idea of what we were going to put on the board.
- Tuesday, March 20th, 2018 - Leah bought a .5in. x 23in. x 23in. MDF board from Home Depot. We initially thought that we were going to use this material board for our project.
- Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 - We learned that the MDF board will absorb water and have a hard time lasting in rainy and wet weather.
- Thursday, March 22nd, 2018 - Leah returned the MDF board we thought we were going to use for our project. In the same dimensions, she bought plywood, so when covered in paint, it won't take in as much damage as an MDF board.
- Friday, March 23rd, 2018 - Leah bought an 118ml tube of white acrylic paint to prime the board. She then painted two dark green vines as well. This dried overnight.
- Saturday, March 24th, 2018 - Leah dropped off the started painting of the sign at Sydney's house.
- Saturday March 24th through Wednesday March 28th, 2018 - Sydney fantastically painted beautiful designs and perfected the whole entire sign. It was amazingly constructed, and we then had our finished product on that last day.

Hummingbird Sketched!
Primed!
On March 23rd, Leah bought a tube of white paint, and primed the wooden board in white. She then took green and added vines and with blue, added the letters WGHS for Willow Glen High School. Then, it was let dry and the next morning, ready to be shipped off.
New Board Bought!
Since we had difficulty figuring out how the MDF board could work, we decided to just return it and get the exact same dimensions, but this time, it is a fully wooden board. Leah bought it on Thursday, March 22nd.

Crisis!
Turns out that MDF boards are difficult when surviving through harsh weather conditions! We have to return the one we had already bought, and replace it for an actual full on wooden board. This way, It is an easier way to prevent the board from getting soggy, and also a better way to install a sign that has lees of a chance of turning moldy or getting ruined!

MDF Board Bought! Start of Journal
Today, on March 20th, 2018, we bought what was mainly needed for the sign for the Hummingbird Garden. This is an MDF board, or a medium density fiberboard, which we can paint and create a beautiful sign! The dimensions are .5 in. x 24 in. x 24 in.. At Home Depot, the price was only $5.85.
This is an example of what an MDF board looks like.

All About Our Project! (And Us!)
For our third ESLP, we decided to paint a sign for our school's garden. The garden we're painting a sign for, the Hummingbird Garden, is right in front of the MLC building.
Our two previous projects were successes. For our first project, we decided to build a bench. For our second project, we painted a four-part mural. To see those projects, visit ecoservice2017-18.blogspot.com (bench) and eco2service2017-18.blogspot.com (mural). Overall, those were very interesting and fun projects to work with. We both decided to do another creative project - paint and establish a sign! Due to our last few projects, we've had practice with woodworking and painting.
Here's a little introduction to us, Leah and Sydney:
Leah Chiponis, 9th Grade
My name is Leah Chiponis, and I was born in San Jose, California. I have lived in San Jose my whole life, and I have a bit of experience with woodworking and painting from my past two ESLP's. Both were very enjoyable, and I'm sure that this project will be just as fun. As life goes on, I am looking forward to having more experience and creating new things.

Sydney Stitt, 9th Grade
My name is Sydney Stitt, and I'm originally from Hunan, China. I moved to San Jose, California when I was 16 months old. I've always loved painting and design, though I will admit I don't have that much experience (besides my past two projects) with woodworking. I'm excited to begin this project, as the past two have taught me so much about design and woodworking.
